Marquette Women’s Soccer Preview: vs DePaul

The Golden Eagles got their first Big East victory on Wednesday. Can they keep it going?

This preview was going to go one of two ways depending on how Wednesday night’s match against St. John’s ended up. On paper, that looked like a situation where Marquette women’s soccer should have been able to win, and perhaps win easily if things broke right for them. One way or another, the Golden Eagles needed to make the on paper projection work out for them because they came into the contest at 0-0-2 in Big East action. They had to frantically rally to draw with Butler and then caught a bad break in a draw with Creighton, and so grabbing hold of a seemingly obvious chance for a win, no matter the process to end up with three points, seemed like a pretty big deal for head coach Chris Allen and his charges.

Well, things broke right for Marquette as they pummeled the Red Storm in the shots department and scored three unanswered after allowing an early goal for a 3-1 victory and a 1-0-2 record in Big East play. 1-0-2 is a long way away, spiritually speaking, from 0-1-2 or 0-0-3, that’s for sure.

That turns Saturday’s contest against a Big East team without a win through three matches into a seemingly chance to build on a victory instead of an anxiety-ridden desperate attempt to finagle three points out of a fellow woebegone team. Again: Big difference between those two things!

Maybe it’s a little bit too early in the season to really start standings watching, but the fact of the matter is Marquette has a draw with a team they’re tied with at the moment, a draw with a team that’s one point behind them, and a win over a team that’s three points back. Saturday’s game is against one of the four teams that don’t have a win through three matches, and MU still has to play two of them. This has all the appearances of a match that Marquette can win and perhaps should win… but the Golden Eagles have to go out there and do the work to get that done.

Marquette is 20-6-3 all time against DePaul. I keep forgetting that this series is heavily tilted towards Marquette because I fervently remember the run of Loss/Draw in the Big East tournament/Loss in 2014 and 2015 as part of the formative years of paying attention to this team for this website. In fairness to DePaul, when the timeshifted 2020 season started up, Marquette only had a 15-6-2 advantage in the series, so things have gotten even more lopsided in the past couple of years, even with a 1-1 draw in Chicago a year ago.

DePaul isn’t just winless in Big East play, they’re winless in their last four matches AND they’ve scored just one goal. In fact, they’ve scored just two goals in their last eight matches, and as you might expect, they’re 1-6-1 in that stretch. The win was 1-0 over Eastern Michigan in a contest where EMU won the shots battle 9-8, and the draw was the one you see in the top line here, 1-1 against Butler. DePaul was the team getting the equalizer there, with Tewabech Seerup scoring in the 70th minute while Butler outshot the Blue Demons 8-5 overall.

My goodness, DePaul sounds like unwatchable soccer.

The Blue Demons are getting outshot on average, 12.6 to 9.3, so it seems like DePaul’s best chances for points are when the game grinds to a near inextricable halt. Marquette is outshooting teams 13.8 to 10.5 this season, so that feels like it could be “MU asserts their advantage” fairly easily, but also those numbers are boosted up by the 24-4 adventure against St. John’s on Wednesday night. The Golden Eagles weren’t that hot on shots going into that match, so that feels a little bit more like “Marquette could get sucked into the Blue Demons’ quicksand fairly easily.”

Katelyn Jamie is DePaul’s most productive offensive threat this season with three goals. That gets her to the team lead there and tied with Tessa Fagerson for the points lead with six. Fagerson has two goals and two assists to get to six points, and those helpers are tied with Shayna Da Silva for the team lead there. DePaul seems to be trying to get the offense to go through Sienna Gonzales, but she has nothing to show for her team high 24 shots on the year. She has just three shots in three Big East matches so far, so we’ll see how much she actually plays into what DePaul’s plans are.

Maddie Iro has played all 180 minutes of the last two matches after coming on in relief for the final 28 minutes against Xavier in the Big East opener. I presume that means she’ll play over Mason Hillery on Saturday as well, but it’s head coach Michele O’Brien making the call, not me. Iro was a freshman at High Point last season, and through 253 minutes of action with the Blue Demons, she is letting in 1.07 goals per 90 minutes and stopping 78.6% of shots on goal. Both of those numbers are better than what Hillary had done in 736 minutes, so that’s why it makes sense to stick with Iro. After all, for every 1% better your offense gets, things get 1% easier for your defense.
