Cody Rhodes wasn’t there to save Randy Orton on SmackDown, after Paul Heyman planted the seeds for a heel turn.
The main event of tonight’s (Oct. 3) episode of SmackDown featured Randy Orton and WWE Champion Cody Rhodes teaming up against The Vision’s Bron Breakker and Bronson Reed. This match came about after Orton saved Rhodes from an attack by The Brons last week.
Earlier in this episode, Paul Heyman planted the seeds for Orton to eventually betray Rhodes. Heyman said if Orton loses tonight, then how can he not look over at Rhodes and say, “Where were you, champ?”
Heyman’s prophecy was realized at the end of the main event when Breakker did this wild leap to drive Rhodes through the barricade at ringside, effectively taking both men out of the mix for the remainder of the match.
That left Orton and Reed in the ring to determine a winner. Heyman distracted the ref at that point, allowing Seth Rollins to run in from behind and stomp Orton’s head into the mat. Reed then pinned Orton with a Tsunami splash.
The heels celebrated their win and were walking up the aisle to end the show. However, Rollins couldn’t stop there. Against Heyman’s advice, Seth stormed back in the ring to try stomping Cody. He was instead laid out by Rhodes.
So Cody Rhodes ended the night standing tall, with Orton sitting in the corner likely wondering, “Where were you, champ?”
