After a dramatic late win against Livingston last weekend, Rangers are back to losing ways, as they suffered a 2-1 defeat against SK Sturm Graz in the Europa League. While the victory over Livi helped them climb up to 8th in the Premiership standings, a setback on Sunday evening against the newly promoted Falkirk could further jeopardise Russell Martin’s future as the Ibrox chief.

Falkirk registered their only league win at Pittodrie against the bottom-placed Aberdeen. Although they have struggled so far with just five points from six outings, Rangers’ dreadful run, as well as the home advantage, boost their chances of defying the odds and scripting a result.

Defence

Jack Butland conceded twice in Austria, but kept the Gers in the contest with some crucial saves. He has impressed so far in the last line of defence, and therefore, should keep his place between the sticks ahead of Liam Kelly.

Martin has failed miserably in terms of getting his backline into shape. Nasser Djiga and Manny Fernandez are waiting on the wings for their opportunities behind the first-team duo of John Souttar and Derek Cornelius. But the gaffer should rely on the first-team duo, along with James Tavernier and Jayden Meghoma, as the fullback pair. Max Aarons, who scored the late winner against Livi, could once again feature as a second-half substitute. Nevertheless, the crisis is more due to the manager’s incompetence rather than the quality of their defensive options.

Midfield

Mohamed Diomande missed the European tie due to suspension, and it remains to be seen whether he is reintegrated into the starting XI, having lost his place to Connor Barron in the recent fixtures. The Ivorian offers more balance and flexibility while partnering with Nicolas Raskin as the ‘double pivot’, and therefore, should be brought back in the middle of the park. Barron, as well as Joe Rothwell, could be involved as second-half substitutes.

However, Thelo Aasgaard has failed to live up to the expectations as an advanced playmaker. The Norwegian has featured frequently upon his return from a brief injury layoff, and Martin should drop him in favour of Lyall Cameron, given his experience in Scottish football.

Attack

Djeidi Gassama is back in the scoresheet with a spectacular finish against Sturm Graz. He has cemented his place down the left, but the Gers boss should restore Bojan Miovski up top after handing a start to Youssef Chermiti at the Liebenauer Stadium. Oliver Antman might keep his starting spot ahead of Mikey Moore on the right-hand flank.
