From top ten to unranked in one week for both teams.
Texas and Penn State out of latest AP Top 25 College Football poll originally appeared on The Sporting News
The latest Associated Press College Football poll for Week 7 added another shake up at the top. Miami surged back to No. 2 after a convincing win over Florida State, while Texas Tech reached its highest ranking in more than a decade. However, the story of the week was the teams out of the rankings.
Penn State and Texas fell out of the Top 25 for the first time since 2022.
This came after UCLA handled the Nittany Lions for their first win of the season. Also, Arch Manning and the Longhorns were handed another loss by the struggling Florida Gators.
Ohio State remained No. 1 following a dominant 42-3 performance over Minnesota, though the Buckeyes received just 40 first-place votes, but was the fewest since taking over the top spot five weeks ago. Miami earned 21 first-place votes after its rivalry win and leapfrogged idle Oregon, which slipped to No. 3 despite holding five first-place votes.
The Hurricanes head into another bye week but are a legit threat. Mario Cristobal's team has shown resilience and growth compared to recent years of inconsistency. They're firmly in the ACC driver seat and will be in the College Football Playoff conversation.
The rest of the top five includes No. 4 Ole Miss, and No. 5 Texas A&M. The Aggies’ 31-9 victory over Mississippi State matched their highest ranking since early 2021 under Jimbo Fisher. Texas Tech’s 35-11 win at previously unbeaten Houston vaulted the Red Raiders to No. 9. Their best position since finishing No. 8 in 2008 and tops for the Big 12. Georgia climbed two spots to No. 10 after defeating Kentucky.
The week’s biggest storyline was without a doubt the dramatic fall of Penn State. The Nittany Lions tumbled from No. 7 to unranked after a stunning 42-37 loss to UCLA. Nico Iamaleava powered the Bruins’ upset with five total touchdowns, marking UCLA’s first victory of the season and one of the largest point-spread upsets in recent memory. The drop tied for the second-biggest fall in poll history.
Penn State was joined by Texas, marking the first time since 1986 that two top-10 teams exited the rankings in the same week. No. 23 Memphis and No. 24 South Florida entered the poll. This shows how wild week-to-week can be in college football.
