Gwalia United have appointed Steve McCarthy-Campbell as head coach to succeed James Thomas, who left as manager on 1 October.

McCarthy-Campbell has left Barry Town United women after two years in charge of the domestic Adran Premier club.

The south Wales team, who play in the English women's National League Southern Premier Division have also signed Norwegian goalkeeper Benedicte Haland.

Thomas left Gwalia United just four months after taking the role on a permanent basis.

Gwalia United co-owner Julian Jenkins said: "Steve's appointment reflects the club's clear and long-term ambition — to identify, nurture, and fast-track Welsh players capable of competing at the highest levels."

McCarthy-Campbell was "proud" of his new role and says Haland's "experience and mentality will be invaluable as we continue to evolve as a team".

Barry Town United women's chairman Luke Williams said: "We are extremely grateful for what Stevie has delivered for our Women's section both on and off the pitch during his tenure where he has overseen great progress for the club."

Charlie Mitchell took charge for Gwalia's 1-0 home defeat by Real Bedford on Saturday to leave the Welsh club fifth in the table.
