Leeds United edged past Norton & Stockton Ancients in the final qualifying round of the Adobe Women’s FA Cup to reach the first round proper of the competition.
With the tie still deadlocked after 90 minutes, goalkeeper Carrie Simpson made an all important save during the penalty shootout to ensure the Whites progressed.
After the full-time whistle on Teesside, skipper Shauna Legge believes the team weren’t at their best but getting through was all that mattered.
“We got there in the end,” the defender told LUTV. “We knew what we had to do and I am just glad that we got the result.
“Obviously, we knew it was going to be a game of two halves. We knew how the wind was going one way and the other. I thought we managed it in the first half with the wind coming against us.
“And then I do think that we were more on top in the second half, obviously, with the wind behind us.
“But, like I say, it was just one of those days where it just didn’t seem to go back at net. But, we got the result so we are glad with that.
“We want to win every single game that we possibly can and we spoke about coming out of the league into cup competitions and keeping the momentum and being able to build on that and then slip back into the league action, which obviously we are looking forward to next week now.”
Reflecting on teammate Simpson’s heroics in the shootout, Legge added: “I was just saying to her at the end then, I said I knew she was going to save at least one and obviously got full faith in the penalty takers as well!”
