An Over-75s World Cup finalist has said it was a "brilliant" experience, despite his team meeting the fate of many an England side - losing to Germany.

Drew Warren, from Yelford near Witney, Oxfordshire, was playing for England at the Veterans Football World Cup in Tokyo - which he described as "an amazing place".

Having qualified from their group and beaten Wales on penalties in the semi-final, the team faced Germany in the final on 3 October.

England, who were reigning World Champions, lost 3-0 to a German side that included ex-Bundesliga professionals and was described by Mr Warren as "excellent".

"It was those Germans, again," he said, comparing the team's experience to the Three Lions of 1990, 1996 and 2010.

The 75-year-old said he still had "plenty of football left to play", adding that he hoped to take part in next year's competition.

The over-75s division is part of the World Soccer Festa 70Plus - an international football tournament for veterans, which also includes the over-70s and over-80s teams.

Next year's is being held in Brisbane, Australia.

Ahead of the 2025 tournament, Mr Warren explained he had been playing football since childhood.

"I played for Aston for a few years, then had a rest, concentrating on the business and then started again with Witney Royals," he said.

"When I was 50, the lad came home from uni, started playing, I went along for training - before I knew it, I was playing again."

He said he kept his fitness level "reasonable" with regular training in Thame and Tilsley Park in Abingdon.

"To have that hour of football with those lads who are a bit quick keeps me on my toes," he said.
