A 69-year-old man allegedly stabbed Sanchez in self defense.
New details have emerged after former NFL quarterback and current Fox Sports analyst Mark Sanchez was charged for his alleged role in an altercation that left him with several stab wounds.
Sanchez was charged with three misdemeanors for his alleged role in the altercation: battery resulting in injury, unlawful entry of a motor vehicle, and public intoxication.
Indianapolis police were called to Loughmiller’s Pub and Eatery on West Washington Street around 12:35 a.m. and found Sanchez wounded in his torso from multiple stab wounds.
In a nearby alley, a 69-year-old man, the other person involved in the incident, was found with cuts to his face. The man had been working between the Westin Hotel and the Indianapolis Marriott Downtown, collecting used cooking oil.
Hotel surveillance footage appeared to show Sanchez approaching the man’s truck and having a conversation with him before it turned into a physical conflict.
According to the court documents reviewed by Complex, Sanchez allegedly opened the driver’s door of the truck and sat down despite being told to leave by the other man, who told investigators that the former NFL quarterback appeared to be intoxicated.
Sanchez allegedly claimed to have spoken to a hotel manager who told him the truck wasn’t supposed to be there.
The man tried to call his supervisor as Sanchez allegedly blocked him from doing so, leading to the physical confrontation. Investigators said Sanchez threw the 69-year-old man toward a dumpster, leading him to use pepper spray to defend himself.
Sanchez allegedly kept advancing, and the man pulled out a knife and stabbed him several times in self-defense.
When interviewed by detectives later at the hospital, where he was listed in critical condition, Sanchez reportedly said that he only remembered “grabbing for a window” but didn’t know who attacked him or where the confrontation happened.
Sanchez was issued a $300 cash bond and is set to appear in court for an initial hearing on Oct. 7.
Marion County Prosecutor Ryan Mears released a statement about the incident, saying, “What began as a disagreement between a 38-year-old former professional athlete and a 69-year-old man should not have escalated into violence or left anyone seriously injured. As with any case, we will follow the facts and the law wherever they lead.”
After news of Sanchez’s stabbing broke, Fox Sports released a statement confirming his injuries.
“Mark Sanchez was injured in Indianapolis on Saturday and is currently recovering in the hospital in stable condition,” the network said. “We are deeply grateful to the medical team for their exceptional care and support. Our thoughts and prayers are with Mark, and we ask that everyone please respect his and his family’s privacy during this time.”
