Kentucky Wildcats football coach Mark Stoops doesn’t have much confidence after UK had the doors blown off by the Georgia Bulldogs in a 35-14 blowout loss that wasn’t even as close as the lopsided score indicated.
Yahoo Sports’ Nick Bromberg predicts that the Wildcats won’t win another game for the rest of the season as the offense, which was once buoying Kentucky during an early stretch of SEC play, has sputtered.
“Hardly anyone expected the Wildcats to go to Athens and get a win against No. 12 Georgia. But the 35-14 loss to the Bulldogs is yet another sign that Kentucky is currently stuck under coach Mark Stoops and may need an offensive overhaul. UK had 270 yards of total offense in the loss as it fell to 0-3 in the SEC. Kentucky has not gained 400 yards of offense in a conference game since Oct. 28, 2023, in a 33-27 loss to Tennessee. As the SEC is incredibly wide-open and deep, the Wildcats may be the worst team in the league. With games against Texas, Tennessee, Auburn, Florida, Vanderbilt and Louisville remaining, Kentucky may not win another game against an FBS team all year,” Bromberg wrote.
Though the NCAA only recognizes one 10-win season from Stoops since 2018, the 58-year-old has had two, which will likely save him from being let go from Lexington. That, and his $38 million contract buyout.
Stoops, for what it’s worth, refuses to give up on UK.
“There's zero chance I'm walking away. There's no quit in me, so that's unequivocally 100 percent false. Anyone who tells you that is lying,” Stoops said to reporters about his potential firing after the Georgia loss.
While the Wildcats likely aren’t going bowling and are in the midst of their second consecutive lost season, Kentucky could still play spoiler to several fading SEC hopefuls to close out their schedule.
Beating the Texas Longhorns, Auburn Tigers, and Florida Gators would put Steve Sarkisian, Hugh Freeze, and Billy Napier on hot seats. In fact, defeating the latter two may lead to new head coaches on the Plains and in the “Swamp.”
It’s a lost season, but memories could still be had. Stoops needs those so these conversations can actually go away. Because Stoops's asking for it certainly won’t lead to that.
