The top five of the Utah high school football rankings remains the same as the regular season is nearing its end.
Corner Canyon remains at the top of the pack, while Skyridge moves to No. 2 in the Beehive State after a double-overtime win over now-No. 3 Lone Peak. Just one team in the top 25 remains undefeated heading into the final couple of weeks of the regular season.
Another six ranked matchups are on the schedule this week. Below are the top 25 teams in Utah heading into the ninth week of the season, according to the Massey Ratings.
1. Corner Canyon Chargers (6-1)
After defeating Skyridge 49-14 two weeks ago, Corner Canyon didn’t play last week and now gears up for two more top-10 matchups to close out the regular season. Star senior four-star quarterback Helaman Casuga is now over 1,900 passing yards for the year and has tallied 25 total touchdowns. The Chargers still boast the best roster in the state and will be a tough out in the playoffs, per usual. This Thursday, No. 5 American Fork will head to Draper and look for a massive upset.
2. Skyridge Falcons (6-2)
There was no time for Skyridge to mope after its beatdown loss to Corner Canyon as it had to take on Lone Peak, the only team that has defeated the Chargers this season. Fans were treated to a double-overtime thriller in Lehi. After getting held to zero points in the first half, Skyridge mustered 24 second-half points, fought to a second overtime, held Lone Peak to a field goal, then punched in a touchdown to take home a massive win. Senior QB Kaneal Sweetwyne threw for 231 yards and two touchdowns, then also rushed for 81 yards and another score. Senior running back Lincoln Tahi rushed for 128 yards, had 85 receiving yards and finished with two TDs in the win. The Falcons are now on a bye and will return to action against No. 5 American Fork on Oct. 15.
3. Lone Peak Knights (5-3)
The Lone Peak defense looked the part early and was led by senior linebacker Tony Grimmer, who finished with 21 tackles. Junior quarterback Cruz Christensen threw for 338 yards, two touchdowns and two picks. Receiver Jaron Pula had seven catches for 175 yards and two scores. After upsetting No. 1 Corner Canyon, Lone Peak has now lost two in a row to fall to 5-3 on the year. It now takes on No. 7 Lehi this week and is in desperate need of another big victory.
4. Davis Darts (7-1)
Fighting through weather and a postponement, Davis trudged to a 21-10 victory at No. 16 Farmington. It wasn’t the usual absurd boxscore for senior star QB Tradon Bessinger, but he still threw for 255 yards and two touchdowns. The Darts continue to take care of business and look to be on track for a 9-1 regular season. They take on 2-5 Layton this week.
5. American Fork Cavemen (6-2)
Another game in the state that was shortened by weather, American Fork was held to just a field goal in a disappointing 26-3 loss to No. 7 Lehi. Offense was essentially non-existent, as the Cavemen finished with just 96 passing yards and 59 rushing yards. Now 6-2, American Fork gets another big opportunity this week as they go on the road to take on top-ranked Corner Canyon. The Massey Ratings predict a lopsided win for the No. 1 Chargers.
