GIRLS SOCCER

Scituate 4, Toll Gate 3

SCITUATE – Whatever message Tim Brown was trying to convey at halftime to the Scituate girls soccer team, it was received loud and clear.

Down two goals to Toll Gate at the break, the Spartans wasted little time in cutting the deficit in half and worked hard to tie the score before Jenny Chatelle cleaned up a loose ball in front of the net for the go-ahead goal that stuck in a 4-3 win over the Titans.

“Screaming helps. If we’re tortured into doing something, we’re going to go and take it,” Scituate goalie and senior captain Arianna Fotopoulos said. “I’m telling you – if you go out and tell your team ‘you’re doing a good job, you just need to stick through it,’ we’re going to keep doing what we’re doing.

“If you’re going to be like ‘you need to step up this game, you need to help us, you need to help out your own team,’ they’re going to go out and do it.”

Toll Gate dominated possession and play the entire first half and the scoreboard showed as much. Thanks to goals by Ava Ficher, Madison Gautieri and Nicole Molina had the Titans ahead 3-1 and after the way the first 40 went, more than ready to grab a win.

Brown’s halftime speech wasn’t direct and to the point. Instead of zoning out the coach, every member of the Scituate team listened intently – and then came out to work in the second half.

Freshman Lexi Butera struck 35 seconds into the second half to cut the deficit to one and shortly after, Bowden came through with a header off a corner that somehow snuck through traffic in front of the net and into the goal to tie the game.

With just over 20 minutes left to play, Butera nearly had the game-winner. She made a terrific run at the net but the shot was knocked away and rolled away from Butera and the keeper near the 8-yard mark. Chatelle, trailing the play, never slowed down and blasted it in for the go-ahead goal.

“We just put our effort in. We didn’t let the control us,” said Bowden, who had two goals. “We stepped up, second half, and we did what our coach told us to and that’s what works.”

Toll Gate tried to make things interesting late. With darkness falling over Caito Field – where there are no lights – the last 10 minutes were played in near darkness. The Titans had some opportunities, but Fotopoulus and the Scituate defense did their jobs and made sure the scoreboard didn’t change.

“We put our head in the game tonight,” Fotopoulos said. “I think this win is going to take us further.
