Panthers take down Terre Haute North while Cougars' top singles player takes another step
It was a bit of a bittersweet 4-1 win for the Bloomington South boys tennis team in the opener of the Brownsburg Regional on Tuesday.
The No. 6 Panthers forged four fast victories to plow on to the finals on Wednesday against No. 15 Avon, a 5-0 winner over Mooresville in the other semifinal.
But any individual hopes South might have had are gone as the No. 1 doubles team of Abe Corry and Josh Sang, who didn't lose a postseason match last year at No. 2 doubles, fell hard, 7-5, 3-6, 6-4. They had beaten the Patriots top team 6-0, 6-4 in the regular season.
Elsewhere, South rolled as Caleb Lian won 6-1, 6-1, Alex Busch won 6-2, 6-2 and William Liao won 6-0, 6-2. At No. 2 doubles, Connor Couch and Marko Mantano were 6-4, 6-2 winners.
The winner of Wednesday's final plays the Jasper Regional champion at semi-state. The Jasper Regional was rained out on Tuesday and pushed back to Wednesday and Thursday.
North's Murphy advances
In the individual singles tourney, Bloomington North's Brady Murphy picked up a 6-1, 6-1 win over Owen Valley's Sean Goss.
Murphy will face Northview's Brayden Goff, a Marian basketball recruit, in the next round.
