PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — At first glance, Roger McQueen may seem like an ordinary college freshman, but he is far from it.

The 6’6″ forward from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan is one of the most talented hockey players the Providence men’s hockey program has seen. This past April he was selected 10th overall in the 2025 NHL Draft by the Anaheim Ducks at just 18-years-old. However, he decided to come to Friartown for a unique reason.

Hudson Malinoski, an assistant captain for the team, is one of Roger’s childhood best friends. His friendship with Malinoski, coupled with playing for an esteemed coach like Nate Leaman, were two major factors in the young star’s decision to forego going pro for the time being.

McQueen is one of seven active players on Providence that have been drafted by an NHL team.

The Friars (#7) open the season on Friday night against Michigan (#9) at Schneider Arena at 7 p.m.
