Arizona Cardinals head coach Jonathan Gannon was understandably irate over running back Emari Demercado's Week 5 blunder, but he went too far.
Demercado was responsible for erasing a touchdown off the board against the Tennessee Titans on Sunday after he dropped the football before crossing the goal line for what would've been a 72-yard touchdown run.
The blunder proved very costly, as the Titans ended up mounting a wild comeback and winning the game, 22-21.
After the play, Gannon was visibly upset with his running back and had an altercation with Demercado on the sideline that saw the Cardinals head coach appear to strike the veteran.
Now, Gannon is paying the price.
According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, Gannon will be fined a whopping $100,000 by the Cardinals for the controversial exchange with Demercado. Meanwhile, the NFL has said it will not take action against Gannon.
"Sources: Cardinals are fining HC Jonathan Gannon $100,000 for his sideline altercation with RB Emari Demercado, who dropped the football before crossing the goal line Sunday on what would’ve been a 72-yard touchdown run. There will be no further discipline for Gannon," Schefter reported.
Gannon addressed the situation on Monday, saying he regretted the interaction with his player and took full ownership of his mistake.
"I woke up this morning and didn't feel great about it, honestly," Gannon said. "So in the team meeting I addressed it, I apologized to Emari, apologized to the team. I just told them I let the moment of what happened get the better of me."
With that controversy now seemingly behind him, Gannon and the Cardinals will prepare to take on the Indianapolis Colts in Week 6.
