James Tarkowski has signed a new two-year contract with Everton, extending his stay at the club until 2028.

The defender’s previous deal was due to expire next summer, but Everton have moved to secure one of their most reliable performers as part of their wider squad rebuild under David Moyes.

Tarkowski joined the Toffees from Burnley in 2022 and has since made 128 appearances across all competitions. He has been a near ever-present in defence and is now a senior figure in the dressing room, serving as vice-captain behind Seamus Coleman.

The 32-year-old’s leadership and consistency have made him a cornerstone of Moyes’ side. His durability was underlined by a remarkable run of 111 consecutive Premier League starts before a hamstring injury ended that streak in April.

Everton view him as a key part of their defensive foundation alongside Jordan Pickford and Jarrad Branthwaite. Since Moyes took charge in January, Tarkowski has been central to Everton’s improved organisation and resilience.

His aerial dominance, positional awareness and experience have made him one of the Premier League’s most dependable centre-backs, ranking among the top defenders for clearances, blocks and aerial duels won since joining the club.

Everton’s unbeaten start to life at the Hill Dickinson Stadium has fuelled optimism on Merseyside, and Tarkowski believes the team can continue to build momentum under Moyes’ guidance.

The new contract reflects his faith in the club’s long-term direction and ambition to re-establish itself among England’s top sides.

European qualification remains a clear objective for both player and manager. Tarkowski previously came close during his time at Burnley and is determined to achieve that goal in Everton colours as the club targets a return to continental competition.

His extension also signals the beginning of Everton’s renewal process, with fresh talks planned for Jordan Pickford, James Garner and Vitalii Mykolenko in the coming weeks. The Toffees are keen to retain their core group as they enter a new chapter at their state-of-the-art home.

Tarkowski’s latest commitment underlines his importance to the project and his enduring belief that Everton are finally heading in the right direction after years of instability.
