High school boys golf: Richfield leads Juab after Day 1 of 3A state tournament after late swing atop leaderboard

The final two holes of the 3A state tournament on Monday shook things up in a big and surprisingly way.

Richfield’s top four golfers played the Par 5 17th and Par 4 18th in 1-under par, highlighted by Max Albrecht’s eagle on 17.

Juab, meanwhile, played the last two holes in 5-over, a six-shot swing that changes the outlook for both teams heading into Thursday’s final round at Stansbury Park.

Richfield finished with a 1-over 289 team score and will take a six-stroke lead into the final round after Juab finished with a 295. The teams were tied heading into the final two holes.

Morgan sits in third still within striking distance after shooting a 301.

Richfield is the 3A defending state champion after beating Morgan by three strokes a year ago with 570 team score.

The medalist chase will be wide open on Thursday as well.

Juab senior Denver Douglas, Richfield senior Jorgen Southwick and junior Albrecht all shot 3-under 69s and are tied heading into the final round.

Richfield’s Braigen McConnell and Juab’s Crue Cowan are tied for third after shooting even-par 72s.
