John Mateer injury update: OU football QB questionable vs Texas on SEC availability report

OU football quarterback John Mateer was listed as questionable to play vs. Texas on Wednesday's availability report.

NORMAN — OU football quarterback John Mateer was listed as questionable to play vs. Texas on the initial SEC availability report released Wednesday night.

Mateer is recovering from surgery on a broken bone in his right (throwing) hand that took place two weeks ago. If Mateer plays against the Longhorns, it'd be 17 days post-surgery.

Teams must release an initial availability report on Wednesday by 7 p.m. CT followed by a daily report on Thursday and Friday, before another availability report released 90 minutes before kickoff.

Sooners coach Brent Venables declined to say Tuesday if Mateer was throwing or practicing, saying he was going through "his normal protocol" and had "done zero good-on good work."

Oklahoma Sooners quarterback John Mateer (10) throws a pass during a college football game between the University of Oklahoma Sooners (OU) and the Auburn Tigers at Gaylord Family Ð Oklahoma Memorial Stadium in Norman, Okla., Saturday,Sept. 20, 2025. Oklahoma won 24-17.

Mateer was injured in the first quarter of OU's win over Auburn on Sept. 20, but finished the contest and led a game-winning drive.

The Washington State transfer underwent surgery on Sept. 24 in Los Angeles. The procedure was done by world-renowned surgeon Dr. Steven Shin.

Before the injury, Mateer was playing like one of the best quarterbacks in the country and was the favorite to win the Heisman Trophy. He's thrown for 1,215 yards and scored 11 total touchdowns this season.

Mateer missed the Sooners' game last week against Kent State. Michael Hawkins Jr. started, passing for 162 yards and throwing three touchdowns in a blowout win.

If Mateer isn't able to go, Hawkins will start his second consecutive Red River Rivalry.
