The Cleveland Browns and the Jacksonville Jaguars completed a very interesting trade on Wednesday night before Week 6. With the Jaguars coming off an incredible win over the Kansas City Chiefs just two nights ago, they exchanged cornerbacks with the Browns in a wild trade partway through the season.
According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, the Browns are getting cornerback Tyson Campbell and a 2026 7th-round pick that belongs to the Philadelphia Eagles. To land this package, they are sending Greg Newsome II and a 2026 6th-round pick that originally belonged to the New York Jets.
There is a lot of intrigue with this trade, as it's a rare deal swapping veteran starting cornerbacks well before the trade deadline. But it's one that, at least for the Browns, makes a lot of sense. To understand why this deal works for the Browns, it's important to know what exactly Campbell brings to his new team in the AFC North.
Why the Browns trade for Tyson Campbell is a good move
Both Campbell and Newsome are 25 years old, but there is a big difference in the two's contract status. While Newsome was in the final year of his deal and was set to be a free agent at season's end, Campbell is signed through the 2028 NFL season.

The former Jaguars cornerback signed a four-year, $76.5 million deal with the Jaguars that keeps him signed through the 2028 NFL season. He carries cap hits of $8 million in 2025, $10.596 million in 2026, $23.89 million in 2027, and finally, in 2028, a cap hit of $24.48 million.
He's the same age as Newsome, but is signed for a whole lot longer. Cleveland gets to work with a new cornerback for the next few seasons, while only giving up a player who was likely on his way out, and a late pick swap.
Campbell was the 33rd pick in the second round of the 2021 NFL Draft, just seven picks after the Browns took Newsome. In his four and a quarter seasons with the Jaguars, he has six interceptions, 42 passes defended, 296 tackles, and nine tackles for loss.
There is a reason for the Jaguars giving up on Campbell. While he was a great corner in his first few seasons in the NFL, the last three haven't been as great. In 2025, he's allowed a 106.4 passer rating, three touchdowns, and 306 total receiving yards in five games.
Newsome, on the other hand, has allowed an 87.4 passer rating with 234 receiving yards allowed and no touchdowns so far this season. Jacksonville is landing the better cornerback for 2025, but the Browns are getting a player in Campbell who will be around for the next four seasons and has shown the potential to be an elite outside cornerback.
With Liam Coen and James Gladstone taking over in Jacksonville, Campbell became expendable, and the Browns, with Newsome, were a great fit for the Jaguars to move on from one veteran, while still maintaining their strong defense.
In Campbell's NFL career, in 60 games and 59 starts, he's allowed a passer rating of 100. Campbell averages 7.6 yards per target, with 12.4 yards per completion in his five seasons in the NFL. He's also allowed 2,411 receiving yards and 22 touchdowns in his career.
Cleveland is adding a young cornerback in Campbell, who is signed for the next four seasons, all at the cost of an expiring veteran cornerback in Greg Newsome and a pick swap in the 6th and 7th rounds.
Campbell comes to Cleveland to pair with Denzel Ward, who is signed through the 2027 NFL season on a $100.5 million deal. The Browns now have a lot of money locked up in their secondary.
But more importantly, they have both cornerbacks, plus their rookie draft class, all signed for the long haul. Add in their war chest of draft picks, and the Browns could have a very strong roster in short order if they can hit at the quarterback position.
Campbell is an intriguing pickup for the Browns. He's shown potential to be an elite cornerback, and he's also signed through the 2028 NFL season. The Browns swapped Newsome for a cornerback, who, while having a slightly worse season, is locked up for three extra seasons on a reasonable deal, all at the cost of a late pick swap.
