🏑FIELD HOCKEYDivision I

Moses Brown 3, La Salle 2

PROVIDENCE — Moses Brown is the hands-down favorite to run away with the Rhode Island Interscholastric League Field Hockey State Championship, but Wednesday it found out that one hot goalie and one star could be enough to make winning the crown harder than anticipated.

The Quakers took the short trip across the city to take on La Salle and while they started fast — scoring less than two minutes into the game — the Rams were not intimidated. Moses Brown owned possession but had trouble solving La Salle goalie Sophie Owens and a third-quarter finish by Paige Moreau proved to be the goal that gave the Quakers a 3-2 win over the Rams.

“It meant a lot to us that we just kept going through,” Moses Brown senior Goose Brousseau said. “We really worked hard and worked together, and when it was tough, when it was tied, when we were down, we just kept pushing through, and that’s what it’s about.

“We want the close games. We want to fight through.”

Prior to Wednesday night, the closest game Moses Brown has played against an RIIL foe this fall was a 4-1 win last Tuesday against Barrington. The Quakers are loaded with talent, strive for perfection on the field and with the way they execute, often get close to achieving just that.

It took all of 81 seconds for Moses Brown to impose its will, getting a goal from Maeve Stilley off an assist from Maddie Peterson. The rout seemed like it was about to start, but the Rams had other ideas.

Ella Hyland, a Second Team All-State pick last fall, showed off her offensive prowess, getting her stick on the ball in traffic and finding a way to put it into the cage just 51 seconds later. With the game tied at 1, Hyland untied it with a coast-to-coast slicing and dicing of the Moses Brown defense before finishing to give the Rams a 2-1 lead with 12:39 left before halftime.

Trailing wasn’t something the Quakers thought they were going to do on Wednesday, but they seemed unfazed and stuck to the game plan. With Brousseau dominating in the midfield, MB was able to maintain possession and get chances throughout the quarter. Owens turned them away, but Stilley struck again with 4:48 left to send the game to the half tied at 2.

“Our team has a really strong mentality and that’s something that we try to focus on,” said Maeve Rolston, who had a goal overturned in the first half but came up big with the game-winning assist in the third. “Going into this half of the season, it’s something we really try to strengthen and keep going forward.”

In the third quarter, it was more of the same. Moses Brown dominated possession, had opportunities and Owens turned them away. Finally, with 2:12 left in the third, Rolston fed Moreau in front of the net and the senior finished strong to take the 3-2 lead. The Quakers continued to own possession for the rest of the game and, while La Salle had one or two good looks, it couldn’t find the tying goal.

“It’s not something we practice; it’s just keeping our heads in the game and looking for those open opportunities,” Rolston said.

“It’s hoping for space, hoping for lifted ball and trying to get a rebound.”

La Salle drops to 4-5 in Division I and sits in third in the RPI standings. The Rams will have some time to work before getting back on the field on Oct. 15 at East Greenwich.

Moses Brown keeps its perfect season going, improving to 9-0, and remains atop the Division I RPI standings. The Quakers will play a non-league game against Canton (Mass.) on Saturday and will return to league play on Oct. 16 when it travels to play North Kingstown.

“We never want to be comfortable, we never want to be complacent,” Brousseau said. “This reminded us that every single team gets better and we want to be that too.”
