According to an update from Defensa Central, it has come to light that Xabi Alonso has asked Real Madrid to make a strong effort to sign Rodri Mendoza, the 20-year-old midfield talent from Elche.

Mendoza has quickly become one of the most talked-about young players in Spain, and Real Madrid see him as a potential key piece for the future.

Notably, his contract with Elche runs until 2028, and his release clause is just €20 million, making him an attractive option for the club both financially and strategically.

Initially, Mendoza was being considered for Castilla, but Alonso is reportedly keen on having him available for the first team setup in the coming years, with 2026 emerging as a likely period for the transfer.

Mendoza’s profile and potential

The outlet mentions that Mendoza is exactly the type of player Real Madrid have been targeting in recent years – young, Spanish, and with high potential.

At just 20, he has shown maturity and skill that suggest he could become one of the most prominent midfielders in Spanish football.

Sources indicate that he would be thrilled to move to Madrid, but for now, he is not getting carried away with the rumours.

Furthermore, being a domestic talent adds an extra layer of appeal, as senior club officials have repeatedly emphasised the importance of capturing Spain’s top young prospects before foreign clubs step in.

The big question now is whether the Real Madrid board will give the final green light for the transfer or choose another option.

Other targets on the agenda

Meanwhile, it must be remembered that Real Madrid are also keeping tabs on other young midfielders like Adam Wharton from Crystal Palace and Kees Smith from AZ Alkmaar

Reports suggest that Alonso and his technical team are already planning to strengthen the midfield for 2026, ensuring a pipeline of talent that can develop into future stars.

Understandably, combining Mendoza with these current prospects would give Real Madrid a strong foundation for the future.
