Bruno Fernandes has been Manchester United’s go-to man since arriving at the Theatre of Dreams from Sporting in January 2020.

The Portuguese Magnifico continues to be a constant for the club amid a sea of managerial changes. Bruno endeared himself to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer immediately upon his arrival and retained his importance under Ralf Rangnick and Erik ten Hag as well.

The 31 year old is now closing in on 300 appearances for the Premier League giants, and is arguably the club’s best signing in the past decade.

However, his future has come under scrutiny following the arrival of Ruben Amorim, and a subsequent shift to the 3-4-3 system. The player was heavily linked with a move to Saudi Arabia over the summer, and reportedly turned down colossal offers from Al-Hilal and Al-Nassr to stay at Old Trafford.

Excelling from a deeper role

Bruno has been making things happen for United in the final third for years and has created the most chances in the Premier League since his arrival. With 100 goals and 86 assists from 298 games so far, he is already an Old Trafford legend.

This season, however, the Portuguese has had to operate in a deeper role, thanks to an influx of attackers over the summer. Matheus Cunha, Benjamin Sesko, and Bryan Mbeumo arrived at the club before the start of the new season to forge a new-look attack.

Fernandes has suffered collateral damage, with Amorim shifting him to the midfield pivot. The former Sporting man, however, has still been decisive from a deeper midfield position so far.

Recent reports, though, have suggested that the United skipper is unhappy with the new role, which has increased his defensive responsibilities and restricted his attacking freedom.

The situation has added to speculation regarding the player’s future, with Saudi Clubs reportedly planning to return for him in 2026.

No desire to leave Europe

According to The BBC, Bruno Fernandes has no desire to move to Saudi Arabia next year. The Portuguese remains committed to the Red Devils and isn’t considering an exit from European football just yet.

The report stated: “Sources close to the United skipper have completely rejected recent suggestions he is ready to quit Old Trafford after the World Cup next summer and accept a Saudi offer.”

“BBC Sport has been told that is not the case and Fernandes, whose United contract runs to 2027, with the option of an additional year, is only interested in playing in major European leagues. As it stands, he is fully committed to United.

“The project under co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe is a long-term one and sources say Fernandes is determined to put everything into helping United towards a better future, while also believing it is possible to secure a top-five finish that could earn a place in next season’s Champions League.”

Bruno Fernandes has helped United win the FA Cup and the EFL Cup, while also powering them to two Europa League finals, which they lost. The Portuguese was handed the armband in the summer of 2023 and will be eager to lead the club back to glory before he leaves.
