Former Ohio State and Penn State wide receiver Julian Fleming has been charged with vehicular homicide while under the influence and multiple other charges after an ATV crash that killed his girlfriend.

Alyssa Boyd, 23, was killed and Fleming was injured when the ATV he was driving collided with a deer in Bradford County, Pennsylvania, in May. Police noted that neither Fleming nor Boyd were wearing safety equipment, Boyd was pronounced dead at the scene and that a “recently deceased deer was located on scene consistent with damage observed on the ATV.”

Boyd suffered numerous injuries in the crash, including a skull fracture.

Fleming had allegedly been drinking before the crash occurred. Per prosecutors, he told a witness that he had consumed “five or six” beers before getting on the ATV and a blood test showed that Fleming’s blood alcohol content was 0.118 — above the legal limit of 0.08.

Per an affidavit from troopers investigating a crash, a woman said she estimated that Fleming’s ATV was going 30 to 40 MPH when it went past her house and that she heard a “a pop followed by three banging sounds” before she got into her car and drove to the crash site per PennLive.com. Fleming then asserted his fifth amendment rights in the days after the crash.

Fleming was arraigned on Wednesday on the homicide charge along with aggravated assault by vehicle while under the influence, aggravated assault, drunken driving, operating a vehicle in careless disregard unintentionally causing a death, speeding, operating an ATV in a careless manner and operating an ATV on a street. After he was officially charged, Fleming posted a $75,000 bail.

Fleming was a five-star recruit in the class of 2020 and the top receiver in the country when he signed with Ohio State out of high school. He played four years with the Buckeyes and had 79 catches for 964 yards and seven scores before transferring to Penn State for the 2024 season. He had 14 catches for 176 yards and a TD in 2024 as Penn State made it to the semifinals of the College Football Playoff.
