As confirmed by the player himself earlier today, Frenkie de Jong is ‘very close’ to renewing his contract with FC Barcelona.

Multiple reliable sources have confirmed that an agreement has already been reached between the two parties over an extension until 2029.

De Jong renewal announcement next Wednesday

Building on that, Moises Llorens of ESPN has now reported that a date has already been set for De Jong to sign his new contract and the subsequent official announcement.

Indeed, according to the report, an official announcement of the 28-year-old midfielder’s contract renewal is expected next week, on Wednesday, 15 October.

De Jong is currently away on national team duty with the Netherlands, who play Malta later tonight in the World Cup qualifiers, before taking on Finland on Sunday, 12 October.

The midfielder will then return to Barcelona, and the idea is for him to formally sign his contract on Wednesday, 15 October, before the club makes an official announcement.

No more doubts about future

The Dutch international had only one year remaining on his contract with the Catalan club, and for months, there were doubts about his long-term future.

However, negotiations picked up pace after he changed his agent, and everything is now ready for him to extend his deal until 2029.

Signed from Ajax in 2019 for €75 million, De Jong will also be accepting a salary adjustment as part of his new deal to fit into the club’s current wage structure.

With this renewal, Barcelona continue to secure their long-term future, having recently extended the contracts of Raphinha, Lamine Yamal and Jules Kounde, among several others.

Up next on the to-do list for Barcelona is the extension of Eric Garcia, with an agreement understood to be close to renewing the key defender.
