quarterback John Mateer has an uncertain injury status ahead of the Red River Rivalry game against the this Saturday. Whether or not Mateer will be under center at the Cotton Bowl is the prevailing storyline before the heated interstate tradition.

One reporter’s sources incited another reporter to clown the phrasing given on the Mateer “will he, won’t play” question.

First, ESPN’s Pete Thamel provided an ambiguous non-update on whether Mateer will actually be in uniform.

“Sources: Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer is in line to attempt to play against Texas on Saturday. His injured right hand will be monitored, and there’s no certainty he’ll be able to go. He’s listed as questionable,” Thamel wrote. Questionable indeed, given the stop-and-start nature of the tweet.

On3’s Brett McMurphy joked about Thamel’s sources while jokingly sharing what his own may or may not have read.

“Sources confirm to (On3 Sports) that John Mateer might or might not play Saturday vs. Texas,” McMurphy wrote.

Is John Mateer playing against Texas?

Maybe. There are only so many eloquent reporter-speak ways to say that.

His status should be revealed closer to game time. On a somewhat neutral field in Dallas, Texas, Mateer’s return would be a major boost for the underdogs in the historic rivalry game. It feels more likely than not.

It’s not confirmed, though. Neither Thamel nor McMurphy reported it, though only one hinted at having an answer not in jest.
