The Colorado Avalanche defeat the newly introduced Utah Mammoth 2-1 in regulation. It was a bumpy road for the Avalanche offensively, going through multiple shot droughts but timely goals and great goaltending from Scott Wedgewood made sure they picked up the two points.

The first period for the Avalanche started slowly but picked up as the period progressed. Despite out-shooting the Mammoth 13-9, Scott Wedgewood had to make some big saves early in the period. Ross Colton opened the scoring, finishing a great tic-tac-toe passing by with Jack Drury and Victor Olofsson, who gets his first point as a Colorado Avalanche. Gabriel Landeskog takes an interference penalty with 1:51 left in the period, and the Avalanche holds them off to finish the first period up 1-0.

The first half of the second period was relatively uneventful, especially for the Avalanche. They get two chances on the power play with Brandon Tanev and Nate Schmidt being called for tripping, but fail to capitalize on them. Wedgewood continues to be a standout in the game as he denies Dylan Guenther on a breakaway. Though Parker Kelly is called for slashing and just three seconds in, Guenther ties the game with a one-timer of the faceoff. Avalanche outshot heavily 11-4 in the period.

Two minutes into the period, Ian Cole is called for interference, and the Avalanche head to the power play. MacKinnon capitalizes on the man advantage as he snipes one from the far side of Makar's pass to make it 2-1 early on. Josh Manson is called for delay of game, but the Avalanche did a good job killing the penalty.

Jack McBain received a penalty for delay of game, but the Avalanche successfully killed off the penalty. Wedgewood makes a crucial save, robbing Guenther during a breakaway. With two minutes left in the game, the Mammoth pulled Vejmelka in an attempt to tie the score, but they were unsuccessful. The game ended with the Avalanche winning 2-1.

The Avalanche are back in action on Oct.11 against the Dallas Stars at home.
