ANTIOCH, Tenn.– With five seconds remaining in a contest that had been totally dominated by the offenses, the play that ultimately decided Thursday night’s Antioch–Franklin Road Academy tilt would be by the defense.
What also was another huge night for Bears’ quarterback Andre Adams, it would be his freshman brother, Aaden, making the game-sealing play.
The younger Adams intercepted a would-be two-point conversion pass that sealed Antioch’s wild 64-62 victory over Franklin Road Academy. The Bears improved to 8-0 on the season after a 2024 campaign in which they finished 6-5.
“(Aaden) is different. He’s the best athlete in the family,” Andre Adams said. “This is our second time playing together. I played with him in middle school.”
The older Adams reset the TSSAA single-game record for total yards in a game and for a moment, it seemed like he may threaten the total touchdowns for a contest mark. Adams finished accounting for nine total touchdowns on the night, six through the air and three on the ground.
The junior signal caller scored all three of his rushing touchdowns in the opening quarter, helping the Bears build a 28-14 lead after one period. Adams finished the night, unofficially, completing 18 of 27 passes for 385 yards and six scores via the passing game. For the night, Adams totaled 500 yards of offense and the nine scores.
Antioch (8-0) eventually led 56-29 at one point and behind Adams and wide receiver Brandon Goliday, it seemed like the Bears’ offense couldn’t be slowed down. After intermission, however, Antioch’s offense would begin to cool down, allowing for Franklin Road Academy (7-1) to mount a comeback attempt.
It would be Panthers’ sophomore quarterback Jack Nimitz trying to fuel a FRA comeback effort. For moments in the final minutes of the game, it looked like Nimitz might be able to send the game into overtime.
Trailing 64-56 in the final seconds of the game, Nimitz would lead the Panthers down to the Bears’ 1-yard line, with the sophomore capping the final drive of the game with a touchdown on a 1-yard sneak. The all important two-point attempt was the play Nimitz and FRA needed to send the game into overtime, but the younger Adams’ interception ended any hopes for the Panthers and extra time.
“You can never count teams out,” Antioch head coach Arcentae Broome said. “(The kids) have been through a lot. Just to come from where we were at as a program and to be where we are right now, man, it is… it’s a blessing.”
