The global football calendar could be on the verge of a revolution in the coming years. Gianni Infantino, president of FIFA, hinted during the EFC congress that holding the World Cup outside the traditional summer slot could soon become the new norm.

This idea is far from trivial. According to The Athletic, the 2034 World Cup, awarded to Saudi Arabia, could not only take place mid-season, similar to the 2022 edition in Qatar, but might also be pushed back to January-February 2035. The reason? To avoid scheduling during Ramadan, which will fall between November and December 2034.

While nothing has been finalized yet, this discussion underscores FIFA’s openness to major structural changes.
