Rico Lewis registered a maiden goal for England’s Under-21s with City colleague Divin Mubama bagging a brace as the Young Lions recorded a 4-0 triumph away to Moldova to make it two wins out of two in their 2027 Euro Under-21 qualifying campaign.
Lewis, along with striker Mubama who is spending the season on loan at fellow Championship side Stoke and fellow Blues defender Max Alleyne, who is on loan at Watford this season, all started as part of Lee Carsley’s side for the clash in Chisinau.
The Young Lions, who were crowned European Under-21 champions in both 2025 and 2023, maintained their perfect start in Group D with Lewis and Mubama to the fore as they moved top of the table.
Early England dominance was rewarded on 28 minutes when Chelsea winger Jamie Gittens cut in from the left wing before unleashing a fine 18-yard effort that beat Moldova keeper Victor Dodon at the near post.
Mubama then took centre stage as the visitors further upped the attacking ante after the break.
Carsley’s side first doubled their advantage just past the hour when Mubama registered his own maiden goal at Under-21 level, the forward converting expertly inside the Moldovan box after fine work from Ethan Nwaneri.
Mubama was on target again on 72 minutes, neatly converting from the penalty spot after substitute Josh King had been brought down in the box.
And a fine night’s work was then rounded off a minute from time when Lewis got just reward for a fine individual display by finishing from close range to register his first goal for the Under-21s.
The England youngsters are next in action on Monday evening when they play host to Andorra Under-21s at Derby County’s Pride Park.
Kick-off in the East Midlands is slated for 19.45 (BST).
