A new report suggests the Connecticut Sun’s likely new home will be one of the biggest cities in Texas.
When the WNBA was at a low point in the early 2000s, the Mohegan Tribal Nation stepped up and took a big risk by purchasing the Orlando Miracle for $10 million. However, it was a worthwhile risk to take since the group that owns the Mohegan Sun Casino already had an arena for the team to play in.
It also brought their property another unique attraction to bring folks to their hotel and casino. However, the acquisition paid off way better than expected, as the WNBA is in the middle of a boom period and the MTN is looking to cash out while the franchise’s value is at an all-time high.
As the team goes through the process of finding a new owner, a new report suggests the club’s next boss is likely to relocate them down south.
Connecticut Sun to end up in Houston?
“Word has persisted that Houston continues to be the leading destination for relocation of the Connecticut Sun,” NBA insider Jake Fischer reports, “If the franchise is indeed moved out of the Mohegan Sun casino to a new locale.”
Fischer added that WNBA Commissioner Katy Englebert has suggested in the past that Houston was a top destination for future expansion. An important bit of information to note is that a new owner can’t just uproot a franchise and take it anywhere. Relocation comes with a fee, and it is believed to be over $100 million in the WNBA.
Earlier this year, it was revealed that there had already been several bids for the Connecticut Sun. One from a group led by former Milwaukee Bucks minority owner Marc Lasry. Another, from a group led by former Boston Celtics minority owner Steve Pagliuca. And a third was made by a group that includes the state of Connecticut itself, which would have the team play in both Hartford and Uncasville.
There is certainly good value in the Sun. Aside from a down year in 2025, the team had reached the playoffs the previous eight seasons, including a WNBA Finals trip in 2022.
