The lost Joe Burrow, their franchise quarterback, in the second game of the 2025 NFL season. With a strong cast of supporting weapons, going the rest of the year with poor play at the quarterback position would be a waste.
Jake Browning was an intriguing backup, but he struggled too much this season in his four games for Cincinnati. But the Bengals made a trade with the for veteran quarterback Joe Flacco.
Flacco is already slated to start Week 6 for the Bengals, less than a week after being traded to Cincinnati. Ahead of his Bengals debut, Jaron May of WLWT shared what Flacco had to say about his new wide receiver duo of Chase and Tee Higgins. Flacco, clearly, is looking forward to throwing to both receivers this Sunday.

With such great receivers, Flacco also acknowledged how important his role in getting them the ball is. "If you can't throw to them and get on the same page with them," Flacco said, "Then you're in trouble."
Flacco knows his role on the Bengals offense. He doesn't need to scramble or make do with young receivers who are still growing. All Flacco needs to do is get the ball to Chase and Higgins, and they'll do their job after the catch.
If the Bengals' offense can limit turnovers and Flacco can consistently hit both Higgins and Chase, then the Bengals' outlook would be significantly better than it was with Browning at quarterback.
This season, Browning had eight interceptions and six touchdowns with 757 passing yards in his four games for Cincinnati. Flacco, meanwhile, in the same number of games as Browning, threw for 815 yards, two touchdowns, and six interceptions.

Flacco has three times fewer touchdowns than Browning, but that's a product of Flacco not having nearly as great of receivers as Browning did, and also the difference in running backs, with Quinshon Judkins being an elite rusher while Chase Brown has struggled this year.
But now, with Flacco paired with Higgins and Chase, the Super Bowl-winning quarterback will have some of the best receivers he's had in his NFL career. At 40 years old, the Bengals' new quarterback is bringing energy to the club after dropping three straight games.
Flacco called Chase and Higgins two of the best receivers in the world, and also recognized that his only role is getting the ball to those two receivers on Sunday.
The Bengals' first action with Flacco under center will come against the . It's not an easy draw, but Flacco has beaten the Packers once already this season, and the Bengals might play with some fire after their front office traded for Flacco to keep their season alive.
