The Philadelphia Eagles offense is a mess following their 34-17 upset loss to the New York Giants, and their All-Pro right tackle didn’t hold back about why.

Under new offensive coordinator Kevin Patullo, the Eagles rank 29th in total yards, 28th in passing and 26th in rushing yards per game. That shouldn’t be happening with 10 of 11 returning starters from a Super Bowl championship team, including a 2,000-yard rusher.

But the offense has yet to play a full game. Quarterback Jalen Hurts will look masterful for a half before being held in check. A.J. Brown has just one touchdown catch and one 100-yard receiving game through the first six weeks, and Saquon Barkley hasn’t had a 100-yard rushing day this season.

The Birds have now lost back-to-back games to fall to 4-2 on the season with not many answers on the horizon.

Lane Johnson doesn’t mince words about offensive struggles

Following Thursday night’s loss, two-time Super Bowl champion and five-time All-Pro right tackle Lane Johnson didn’t mince words about the offense becoming too predictable.

“I don’t know if we’re predictable, but it seems a lot harder than what it needs to be,” Johnson said, via The Philadelphia Inquirer’s Jeff McLane. “Maybe moving forward have a little bit more variety, hitting the perimeter some and doing a little bit more of that.”

The Eagles have been outgained every game this season as the offense has failed to put their foot on the gas. Johnson said they haven’t been “dominating” despite winning their first four games. They also have failed to use Barkley adequately like they did during his historic 2024 season.

“We got a very talented running back back there who had a great season last year,” Johnson said. “But there’s no flash in that. … In this league, if you become one-dimensional, you’re not making guys think or guessing or putting guys in situations, things can happen like that.”

Johnson added: “Moving forward, maybe more efficient, less predictable and capitalize on the big plays when we’re supposed to.”

Patullo and head coach Nick Sirianni need to take Johnson’s words to heart. The veteran and future Hall of Famer has been through it all in his 13 years with the Eagles. The team needs to turn it around and fast or they will face a similar collapse to that of 2023.
