The deli is widely popular on social media for its viral videos of new sandwich creations
A hero isn’t just a sandwich. In some cases, it’s a sub inspired by rising NFL star.
Taliercio’s Ultimate Gourmet, a Middletown deli known widely for its viral videos of one-of-a-kind sandwiches, has another unique eat on their hands. And this time, it’s inspired by a budding star on the New York Giants.
Taliercio’s debuted the “Skattebo Thang” — inspired by bruising rookie Giants running back Cam Skattebo — on Friday, hours after he scored three touchdowns in a win over the archrival Philadelphia Eagles on Thursday Night Football.
The “Skattebo Thang” is a heaping a sandwich including sliced ribeye cheesesteak, potato kegs (bacon cheddar tater tots), bacon, pepper jack and Cooper sharp cheese, caramelized onions, pepper relish and garlic aioli on a seeded roll.
“It’s an in-your-mouth, smashing type of sandwich which is exactly what he did last night.” Eric Taliercio, co-owner of Taliercio’s, told NJ Advance Media. “It’s a perfect sandwich for a perfect type of player.”

The 5-foot-11, 216-pound running back has become a fan favorite for his punishing running style, post-touchdown backflips and rambunctious demeanor.
Taliercio revealed the idea was brought about from discourse on a viral Twitter post that proclaimed Skattebo would “have the biggest f-----’ deli sandwich named after him soon.”
The deli was flooded with messages regarding the tweet, prompting them to start stacking meats. Taliercio searched the web to find Skattebo’s favorite foods (he apparently loves tater tots) and the sandwich was brought to life early Friday.
The Giants shocked the football world when they defeated the defending Super Bowl champions, 34-17, at MetLife Stadium on Thursday night.
“How funny would it be if we put out a cheesesteak after (the Giants) just beat Philly and say, ‘You don’t have to go all the way to Philly now to have the best cheesesteak around,’” Taliercio said.
The Monmouth County deli was ranked No. 4 on NJ.com’s latest list of New Jersey’s 39 best Italian delis, partially for the creative and playful sandwich spirit this sandwich embodies.
“When it comes to Central Jersey, you’ve got Eagles and you’ve got Giants,” Taliercio said. “Both are great for business so it’s always great to have that customer rivalry. We have a lot of fans of both teams so we’re just keeping up with the times, that’s all it is.”
According to Taliercio, the eatery offers more than 1,600 different sandwiches — part of the reason NJ.com crowned it “Deli Disneyworld” in a story back in 2021.
