Gibraltar Carlson, Jefferson, Ida, Huron, Flat Rock, Summerfield post victories in Week 7.
WOODHAVEN – The battle of unbeatens for the Downriver League lead came down to the final minute.
Gibraltar Carlson wiped out a 23-21 deficit with a late touchdowns to pull out a 27-23 victory.
“What a huge emotional win tonight,” Carlson coach Jason Gendron said. “I couldn’t be more proud of our coaches and players for fighting to the final whistle. Both teams played their hearts out. It was everything you could ask for with two undefeated teams battling for first place in the league.”
Izaiah Wright scored three touchdowns for the Marauders.
“Izaiah put us on his back down the stretch while Trent (quarterback Trent Ison) and our wide receivers were masterful executing the two-minute drill in the final moments.”
Teegan Nagy returned a punt for a touchdown and Kenny McCurdy led the defense with 10 tackles.
Jefferson 53, Grosse Ile 14
GROSSE ILE – Jefferson kept its perfect season alive with a decisive win on the road.
Luke Beaudrie ran for three touchdowns and threw for three more. He finished 14-of-17 for 135 yards and ran for 155 yards.
Drake Jones, who ran for 92 yards, also had a rushing TD.
Trey Oldenburg, Bret Gennoe and Caleb Henry caught scoring passes for the 7-0 Bears.
Gennoe and Grant Hakeos led the defense.
New Boston Huron 56, Airport 14
NEW BOSTON – Huron rang up its highest point total since Oct. 23, 2015 to keep Airport winless.
The Chiefs (3-4) burst out of the gate with 21 points in the first quarter, led 28-14 at halftime and dominated the second half.
Jamil Brown ran for a trio of touchdowns – two in the opening period on runs of 6 and 64 yards and a 9-yarder in the second.
He finished with 144 rushing yards on 16 attempts. And Mark Moore ran for 111 yards on 10 tries.
Dayton Miller caught a 50-yard touchdown pass from Cash Moczdlowsky and scored on a 53-yard run.
Other TD runs for Huron came from Moore (41), Moczdlowsky (17) and Kiyler Caswell (9).
Patrick Murphy ran 68 yards for an Airport touchdown and Jaylen Strong caught a 35-yard scoring pass from Colton Alston.
Flat Rock 51, Milan 14
MILAN – Flat Rock snapped a two-game losing streak and climbed back over .500 at 4-3.
Milan fell to 1-6 with its sixth consecutive loss.
Summerfield 28, Ottawa Hills 27
OTTAWA HILLS, Ohio – Summerfield stopped a two-point conversion attempt with 1:50 left and pushed its record back over .500 at 4-3.
“Last week we lost a game on extra points,” Summerfield coach Dylan Szegedi said. “It’s good to finally get on the good side of an extra-point game.”
The Bulldogs had dropped three of their last four games.
Riverview (4-2) at SMCC (6-0)
MONROE – Riverview spoiled a perfect season for St. Mary Catholic Central and kept its Huron League title hopes alive.
SMCC and Riverview both are 5-1 in the Huron League.
Ann Arbor Pioneer 21, Monroe 14
ANN ARBOR — Monroe found the end zone on the first play of the game but struggled to maintain that momentum in a back-and-forth battle.
Julian Espinoza sprintedd for a 44-yard touchdown on a jet sweep to open the Trojans' first drive. Monroe (1-6) didn't score again until the fourth quarter on a 6-yard run from sophomore quarterback Timothy Richards.
Tied 7-7 at halftime, Pioneer scored twice in the fourth to grab the lead. Monroe had a kickoff return touchdown called back for a hold late in the fourth that would have tied the game.
"We moved the ball well, but shot ourselves in the foot at times, too," Monroe coach Kyle Reed said. "We need to overcome penalties and find ways to win. I can't fault the kids' effort. They're still playing hard, still playing together. Just didn't come away with the W tonight."
Richards finished 8-for-19 passing for 115 yards and a pair of interceptions. He also had a career-high 115 yards rushing on 24 carries.
Defensively, Tanner Collett led the team in tackles and recovered two fumbles. Nolan Cacioppo also played well defensively.
