Friday night's game was almost a comeback for the ages for Terrebonne football, but the Tigers fell just short against St. Charles Catholic.
An improbable comeback bid came up short Friday night as the Terrebonne Tigers fell to the St. Charles Catholic Comets, 31-28.
After a competitive first half — one that saw THS (4-2) take a 13-7 lead in the second quarter and enter halftime with a manageable eight-point deficit — the wheels fell off in the third, as St. Charles Catholic (5-1) extended the lead to two scores midway through the quarter and three scores early in the fourth.
Late in regulation, Terrebonne rattled off back-to-back scoring drives and gave itself a chance to tie or win. However, that chance — and the comeback itself — came up just short.
Big plays
Trailing by 18 with more than three minutes left in the fourth quarter, the Tigers' fate seemed all but sealed. But running back Quincy Adams broke through the line to score a touchdown, and quarterback Owen Oliver scrambled for a two-point conversion to bring it within 10.
On the ensuing onside kick, Terrebonne recovered. Adams found paydirt again, for his third score of the night, and trimmed the deficit to a field goal with less than a minute to go.
Once again, the Tigers recovered the onside kick, and a few plays later, found themselves in the red zone with only five seconds remaining on the game clock. But the field goal attempt to send Friday into overtime sailed wide left as the clock expired and SCC players celebrated on the field.
Big players
Adams and Oliver were the backbone of the offense for most of the night.
Oliver passed for 205 yards and a score, while also adding a rushing score on a quarterback sneak. Adams, meanwhile, put together 187 rushing yards and two touchdowns on the ground, caught a 57-yard touchdown pass, and even managed a few completions down the stretch amid the comeback bid.
They said it
"That ending changes my speech to these kids," THS coach Tyler Lewis said. "They showed determination, they showed grit. Our special teams were phenomenal at that point. We gave ourselves an opportunity to win that football game and we fell short. I can't ask for anything different."
