Marc Guiu is being put though a real washing machine at Chelsea.

Initially signed last summer from boyhood club Barcelona, he ended up staying put rather than going out on loan. That already looks a big mistake. He barely featured outside the Conference League. When he did finally get his chance, he managed to injure himself in the very same game that Nicolas Jackson injured himself in.

First year doesn’t go well for Guiu

Marc Guiu signs for Chelsea.

That ruined his chance of regular games over an extended period, and he continued to get just bitty appearances off the bench rather than anything consistent.

That might have changed this season – he was sent on loan to Sunderland and scored on his first start. But once again it was an injury that derailed his season.

Liam Delap going down with a bad hamstring problem meant that Guiu was emergency recalled from Sunderland. He was then mysteriously ignored by Enzo Maresca until last Saturday, when he came on as a sub against Liverpool.

Guiu frustrations rise

Already there are whispers that Guiu is unhappy. GiveMeSport claim that he’s “becoming increasingly fed up at the lack of game time” he’s getting and was annoyed that teenage winger Tyrique George was chosen ahead of him to play up front against Benfica in the Champions League.

Sunderland would be the only team he could play for now – having featured for Chelsea, he can’t represent a third club this year. It has to be us, or a return to the Black Cats.

Given how well they’re getting on, and given Guiu didn’t make the starting lineup for them even in his brief time, we can’t imagine they will be too interesting in taking him back.

He will get a couple more chances at Chelsea then likely spend the rest of the season on the bench. What a frustrating two years for the young Catalan.
