Germany striker Giovanna Hoffmann is a big doubt for the women's Nations League semi-finals after injuring her knee in RB Leipzig's 2-1 Bundesliga win over SGS Essen.

The 27-year-old is poised to miss out on the two legs against France on October 24 and 28. Germany coach Christian Wück is due to announce his squad on Tuesday.

Leipzig boss Jonas Stephan told MDR late on Friday: "If a player leaves the field in tears, then unfortunately you have to assume that it won’t be fine again in three days. But I don’t know yet. Giovanna is a figurehead of our team, so I don’t need to explain to anyone that this would be a devastating loss for us."

Hoffmann, who had put the Saxons ahead, remained on the ground in the second half following a challenge and clutched her knee. After brief treatment, she left the pitch in tears.
