Sheedy still dreaming of Wales recall

The 29-year-old insists his Test ambitions are strong as ever despite not playing for Wales since 2022.

Cardiff fly-half Callum Sheedy says he still lies in bed dreaming of playing for Wales after three years in international exile.

Sheedy has won 16 caps but has been out of favour since 2022, when Warren Gatland returned to take charge of Wales.

The appointment of a new national boss in Steve Tandy brings a fresh pair of eyes and renewed hope for 29-year-old Sheedy, who is now among the older options for the Wales number 10 jersey.

But he knows any chance of a recall begins with his regional form.

"I still lie in bed and dream of wearing the Wales shirt again," said Sheedy.

"Any player who doesn't dream of playing for their country is probably in the wrong profession. But it's never going to happen unless I put together some form for Cardiff."

Sheedy faces plenty of competition, though the contest to claim the Wales fly-half jersey remains open.

Ospreys' Dan Edwards was the most recent incumbent, having played at 10 when Wales ended their 18-Test losing run in Japan this summer.

Scarlets pair Sam Costelow and Joe Hawkins, as well as Harlequins' Jarrod Evans and even veteran Gareth Anscombe, in France, will all have designs on the shirt.

But none of those players has the advantage of working side-by-side in training with former Wales star Leigh Halfpenny, who joined Cardiff in the summer and is offering support in a coaching capacity while he recovers from injury.

"Working with Leigh is every Welsh kicker's dream," Sheedy said.

"I roomed with him when we were away in Munster and was probably like a competition winner, keeping him up until about 2am asking a million questions.

"He's an unbelievable person, and it's great to learn from someone like him -probably one of, if not the best."

Sheedy has impressed for Cardiff, not least in setting up two tries for Tom Bowen at Munster last weekend, following a rare uninterrupted pre-season that has left him feeling sharp and ready to perform as his side prepare to host Connacht on Saturday.

"We were disappointed with the result but my first experience at Thomond Park was pretty cool," Sheedy said.

"We played Connacht three times last year and came second three times. They're a very good outfit and very well coached but we want to make the Arms Park a tough place to come."
