Texas has started 3-2, capped off by a 29-21 upset loss to Florida in Gainesville, moving to 0-1 in the SEC and falling out of the AP Top 25. While Manning has shown flashes, it hasn’t been enough for the Longhorns, who played from behind from the moment the quarterback took the field. Manning has not lived up to his potential through the early part of the season.

Next up for Manning and company is one of college football’s most storied matchups, the Red River Rivalry against No. 5 Oklahoma. The Sooners have been one of the nation’s best teams so far in 2025, led by quarterback John Mateer and a high-powered offense. Mateer, however, is recovering from hand surgery and his status remains uncertain.

Oklahoma owns two ranked wins — over No. 15 Michigan and No. 22 Auburn — and looks like a true title contender regardless of Mateer’s health. The Sooners have the second-best scoring defense in the country — behind Ohio State — allowing just 7.2 points per game. Manning has struggled against elite defenses in No. 3 Ohio State and Florida, and on Saturday he’ll face a Brent Venables unit that’s the best Oklahoma has fielded in years.

As Texas looks to spark a midseason surge toward College Football Playoff contention, the Longhorns will need Manning to deliver against top defenses, starting Saturday against Oklahoma. Texas also faces No. 5 Texas A&M and No. 10 Georgia later in the season; if Manning can’t elevate his play, the Longhorns could be one of the year’s bigger disappointments. But if he finds another gear, Texas becomes a threat to anyone.
