Update On Real Madrid And Their Pursuit Of This Chelsea Midfielder: What Should Alonso Do?

In a recent report, Fichajes provided an update on Real Madrid and their pursuit of Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez. It is believed that Los Blancos would have to pay €120m to acquire the services of the Argentina international next year.

Fernandez’s Impressive Form In The Premier League

Fernandez has made an impressive start to this campaign as he has managed to produce a run of impressive performances at the heart of Enzo Maresca’s midfield. The Argentine midfield ace has made ten appearances for the Blues this season, netting three goals and grabbing one assist in all competitions.

The 24-year-old deserves a ton of credit for averaging 1.46 shots per 90 minutes in the Premier League. He has kept 40% of his attempts on target. Fernandez has also been excellent when distributing possession from midfield, as evidenced by his pass success rate of 82.2% in the top tier of English football (stats via fbref.com).

His current contract at the West London club will run out in the summer of 2032, which could make it difficult for Real Madrid to sign him on the cheap next year.

What Should Real Madrid Boss Xabi Alonso Do With Regards To Fernandez?

Fernandez doesn’t mind putting in a tireless shift for his team defensively and can strike the ball with power from long range. He has also got the vision to play some decisive passes in and around the opponent’s penalty area.

The Argentine talent is full of energy and running at the centre of the park. Fernandez is primarily a box-to-box midfielder but can also serve as an attacking midfielder or play as a defensive midfielder if required. However, only time will tell whether he can make a smooth transition to life in La Liga if Los Blancos manage to snap him up in 2026.

Fernandez would add a lot of quality to Real Madrid head coach Xabi Alonso’s midfield department. He is good enough to nail down a regular starting spot at the Madrid club.

At 24, Fernandez has his peak years ahead of him, which makes him a good choice for Los Blancos to consider this January or at the end of this campaign. With all things considered, Alonso should focus on going all out to recruit him next year.
