Liverpool have got a well-documented shortage of centre-backs right now.
Selling Jarell Quansah to Bayer Leverkusen was a move that should have been offset by the acquisition of Giovanni Leoni.
However the 18-year-old - signed from Parma for £26m in summer - was injured on debut and is expected to miss up to a year of action.
Leoni’s ACL tear has made the club’s failure to land Marc Guehi on transfer deadline day look all the worse. Arne Slot is now down to only THREE senior fit centre-back options - Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate and Joe Gomez.
Liverpool's centre-back predicament
But even then there are question marks over Konate - out of contract in 2026 - and Gomez - who cannot seem to find his way into Slot’s first-team plans.

Accordingly it would be prudent for the Merseysiders to look into signing a new centre-back sooner rather than later. We’ve seen links materialise with not only Guehi in recent weeks - but also the likes of Ronald Araujo and Jan-Paul van Hecke.
And now one more familiar name is back on the list.
Liverpool were competing for the signature of Willian Pacho back in 2024 before the Ecuadorian ended up joining Paris Saint-Germain from Eintracht Frankfurt.
Liverpool reignite interest in Willian Pacho
The 23-year-old has enjoyed a stunning start to his career with the French capital club - winning the treble in his first season. But Liverpool’s interest persists and they have been named as potential suitors for the left-footer by Fichajes.
Pacho has been in and out of Luis Enrique’s starting lineup at the outset of the 2025/26 season so there may be an opportunity for the Reds’ sporting director Richard Hughes to take advantage of that situation.
"Liverpool maintain Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi as their top target to bolster their defense,” the report reads.
Liverpool exploring signing of Willian Pacho
“But the Reds are also exploring other options, with Paris Saint-Germain's Willian Pacho strongly emerging.
“Liverpool sees Willian Pacho as a serious option for next season. His youth, performance at PSG, and the club's defensive urgency make him an attractive target.”
Given Pacho’s contract doesn’t expire until 2029 and his current estimated transfer value of around €65m - this wouldn’t be an easy deal to get done.
But as shown for the signings of Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak, what the club want these days they usually get.
