Rockford IceHogs open season with a win in an overtime thriller
ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO/WQRF) — The IceHogs ended last season with a loss to the Milwaukee Admirals, so it was only fitting that the Hogs would open this season by defeating the Admirals.
The Hogs defeated their division rivals 3-2 on an overtime goal by Samuel Savoie. That goal was made possible when Jackson Cates scored a goal for the IceHogs with less than two minutes to play in regulation to tie the game and set up the extra session.
The IceHogs’ first goal came in the first period on a shot from the wing by team captain Brett Seney.
Drew Commesso was in goal for the IceHogs to pick up the win. He had 35 saves while allowing the two goals. A huge crowd of 6,190 fans was on hand. The win was also the first for IceHogs’ new head coach Jared Nightingale
The IceHogs turn right around and play their first road game of the season tomorrow (Sunday) in Iowa against the Wild.
