Liverpool need to sign a centre-back as soon as they get the chance.

Ever since Giovanni Leoni tore his ACL on his debut for the club against Southampton in September, the defence has been in crisis. Three centre-backs to play in all competitions simply isn't enough.

As such, we're on the brink of a serious problem. No one could have predicted such a situation to unfold, but many had their doubts before the season started with is why Marc Guehi was targeted.

Despite making an honest and reasonable approach to Crystal Palace for their captain, the Reds were rejected at the last minute and so hopes of signing the Englishman are now turning to next summer's transfer window when he's available to sign for free, although we've got competition.

Another transfer battle with Bayern

Just as we saw last summer with approaches for Florian Wirtz's signature from Bayer Leverkusen, the club is now expected to go to battle with Bayern Munich for their next major signing in Guehi.

This is according to a report from Christian Falk at CF Bayern, who claims that the English defender is favoured by the German giants to potentially replace current centre-back Dayot Upamecano.

He said: "Crystal Palace's Marc Guehi is the number one defensive target for Bayern Munich. He was, in the summer, already the number one targets for Bayern, but at this point, Max Eberl, head of sport, wasn't allowed to buy players - just make loan deals. So it wasn't the right opportunity to make a deal.

"However, in the summer, the Premier League defender will be a free agent, like Upamecano! So if FC Bayern happen to lose the France international, they can go and get another free agent.

"We know there are talks. Bayern want to sign him. But Liverpool FC were very far along with this deal in the summer, and I heard that Real Madrid is a really interesting option for the Eagles centre-half - perhaps the favourite one, as we heard!"

As such, there is a plan in place to make room for Guehi at Bayern, and they're merely just one of the interested clubs. Tying him down as a Red is going to be a lot harder than it looked to be last season.

Of course, the chance to sign 26-year-old Upamecano - if a deal is not possible with Guehi - is not something that Liverpool would sniff at. He'd be a perfectly suitable back-up option if required.

But no one is wanting to give up on Guehi quite yet. He's an experienced England international, he is the current captain at Crystal Palace and his overall calmness on the ball makes him the ideal player to come in, given he could replace Virgil Van Dijk over the next few years, when the Dutchman retires.

Furthermore, he's home-grown, so he truly fits all of Liverpool's needs. All of the ground work was put in last summer, so it's just about sitting him down and convincing him that a move to Merseyside is still what he wants. After all, it was the club that pulled the plug last time, not the player.

Although the club's inability to sign him then could now be a serious problem. Bayern's interest, alongside the other European giants who will also be in the frame, presents a warning to Liverpool that nothing is guaranteed. Well have to fight tooth and nail if we're to be successful in our plan.
