The majority of the Real Madrid players are currently occupied with international duty right now, which gives Xabi Alonso some ample time to rework his strategies.
The Spaniard used the time to not only conduct a friendly, in which Joan Martinez made an appearance for the first-team, but also have one-on-one conversations with players who stayed back at the Valdebebas.
One of them was Alvaro Carreras, the former Benfica defender who has emerged as one of Real Madrid’s standout performers this season.
Xabi Alonso’s advice to Carreras
Carreras has barely put a foot wrong this season, offering seamless transition in the left-back position and being consistent for the large part of the season so far.
However, that didn’t stop Xabi Alonso from offering a piece of advice to the Spaniard, especially in light of Real Madrid’s defeat to Atletico Madrid in La Liga.

Carreras looekd out of place in that game, as he struggled to keep up with Atletico Madrid’s intense press.
Keeping that in mind, Alonso urged Carreras to be mindful when carrying the ball out from the back.
“You have to be practical, you can’t take risks by taking the ball out because they destroy you,”Xabi told Carrera, as relayed by Defensa Central.
One can hardly blame the Real Madrid manager, as Carreras has taken risks at times and this has cost Real Madrid dearly. He cannot take such risks when playing against a well-drilled opponent.
Xabi Alonso’s advice to Carreras comes just a fortnight ahead of Real Madrid’s big game against Barcelona, in which Los Blancos must secure a win, having tasted four defeats in all competitions last season.
