LATEST Oct. 12, 4:38 p.m. PT 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters on Sunday that All-Pro linebacker Fred Warner suffered a dislocated and fractured right ankle against the Buccaneers. Shanahan said Warner will need surgery, which will likely end his season.

The Niners lost their Week 6 road game, 30-19, bringing them to 4-2 on the season, but the loss of Warner will have a far larger impact on the remainder of the season than the one loss.

Oct. 12, 2:05 p.m. PT San Francisco 49ers linebacker and four-time All-Pro Fred Warner was carted off early in Sunday's game against the Buccaneers with what looked like a serious ankle injury.

The injury looked to be an unfortunate accident that happened with 7:48 remaining in the first quarter. While trying to bring down Tampa Bay running back Rachaad White, Niners safety Ji'Ayir Brown rolled onto Warner's right ankle. Players on both sides of the ball immediately called for medical assistance as Warner clutched his leg. The game broadcast only showed the replay of the incident once, and announcer Jim Nantz described it as "a gruesome injury" after seeing it "from several angles."

Warner was able to speak with his teammates as he was loaded onto the cart with a cast on his right ankle.

The Niners immediately ruled out Warner for the rest of the game. The Athletic's Dianna Russini reported shortly after halftime of Sunday's game that Warner suffered a dislocated ankle.

While the team's record has looked great, it's been a season to forget for the 49ers in terms of the injury report. The team has not been fully healthy once this season through six games, as they've missed star players like Brock Purdy, George Kittle, Ricky Pearsall, Brandon Aiyuk, Nick Bosa and Jauan Jennings for various lengths of time. Last week's overtime win over the Rams was seen as an impressive victory because of what the team has had to overcome with these absences.

But just as it looked like the Niners were getting some relief on the injury front on offense, the team's defensive leader, and without a doubt the best player on the roster, has gone down with an injury that could see him out for some time.
