Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Trey Yesavage spoke out against online hate his family members are receiving for his performance on the field.

Before Yesavage, 22, answered questions from reporters ahead of the Blue Jays' 3-1 loss to the Seattle Mariners in game 1 of the American League Championship Series (ALCS) on Sunday, Oct. 12, the pitcher addressed the media with a message.

“Living in this world where there’s so many different opinions and feelings which results in a lot of hate, it’s sad to see that people close to me are being attacked for my performances on the field,” he began on Sunday. “These people have done nothing to warrant negativity for my actions, whether that’s my parents, my brothers, my girlfriend, family. It’s just really sad."

Yesavage said he's aware that he has "the platform to address it, so I am," and added, "I hope that people can realize that those individuals have nothing to do with what happens on the field."

He concluded, "And if you have a problem, I'm a man — I can take whatever opinions anybody has about me and my life, so, I just wanted to get that out there."

Fans on social media quickly spoke out in support of Yesavage and pleaded with fellow baseball fans to be respectful of players and their families, with a specific emphasis on the hate that came from the New York Yankees fan base after the Blue Jays eliminated the Yankees from the playoffs.

"This is disgusting and sadly unsurprising," wrote one fan who added, "Blue Jays fans and Mariners fans can agree - Yankees fans are the worst on the planet."

Another user wrote on X, "I'm a Yankees fan and assuming this came from NYY fans, this is embarrassing. My message to @Yesavage2HOF is keep doing your thing. You have a bright future!"

"Good on trey for speaking up. Thats completely classless of people to attack his family for his performance which was great. What sore losers exist in the world," said another.

Yesavage was a first-round selection in the 2024 MLB Draft. He will make his second postseason start for the Blue Jays tonight in game 2 of the ALCS.
