It's time to vote for the Halifax Health Volusia-Flagler Girls Athlete of the Week for the week of Oct. 6-11.
Last week, New Smyrna Beach golfer Elayna Harvey captured the honors, claiming 54% of the votes. The freshman placed fourth at the Volusia/Flagler Invitational, firing a 76. Harvey followed that with a 1-over-par 37 to be the medalist in a match vs. Seabreeze.
The Daytona Beach News-Journal gathers nominees for upcoming polls from across the area via email at [email protected]. Please send a player's name, school and notable statistics for a given week. Submissions are due no later than 8 a.m. every Monday.
To round out the ballot, our staff also picks athletes from scores and stats posted online or submitted by local coaches. Athletes for all in-season sports, except football, are eligible. The News-Journal recognizes the local gridiron stars with our weekly game balls story.
Voting in the online poll below will close at 10 a.m. Thursday. Votes are restricted to once per device per hour.
Cross Country
Amelia Hansen, New Smyrna Beach: The senior placed 65th out of nearly 300 competitors in the Division B race of the New World Fall Spectacular. Hansen’s time: 21 minutes, 41 seconds.
Sara Van Buren, Matanzas: The senior tallied a 20th-place finish with a time of 20:24 in the Division B race of the New World Fall Spectacular.
Volleyball
Brooke Williams, Deltona: The senior registered 12 kills in a sweep of Burns Sci-Tech.
Tamera Williams, Spruce Creek: The junior posted 15 kills in a sweep of Matanzas.
