England manager Thomas Tuchel confirmed Ollie Watkins returned to Aston Villa because the injury he sustained against Wales was "too painful" - but he added the striker would "try to make it for the weekend". England manager Thomas Tuchel confirmed Ollie Watkins returned to Aston Villa because the injury he sustained against Wales was "too painful" - but he added the striker would "try to make it for the weekend".

Watkins collided with a post late in the first half on Thursday after missing a chance and was in immediate visible discomfort.

"Instead of scoring, he injured himself unfortunately", Tuchel said in Monday's news conference before Tuesday's World Cup qualifier in Latvia.

"It was such a big chance, an easy second goal for him. He was unlucky to hit the goalpost.

"It was very painful for him still and it's just not possible for him to train and also not to play. So, we sent him home."

Villa travel to Tottenham on Sunday when the Premier League resumes.
