Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen faces a critical moment as he works to recover from his injury.

According to journalist Sergi de Juan from AS, once he is fully cleared medically, Ter Stegen will meet with Barcelona to decide his next step.

While staying at the club is possible, it would mean accepting a backup role, but this is a scenario that seems unlikely given his ambitions and competitive nature.

The German keeper had a second operation for lower back problems last July, and the aftermath caused tension at the club.

Thankfully, the controversy has since settled, and now the focus is on his return.

For now, Ter Stegen aims to be available starting in January, with his main goal being to compete with Joan Garcia for the starting spot in Barcelona’s goal.

Contract and club support make decisions tricky

Barcelona remain supportive of Ter Stegen. The sporting directors are ready to keep him until the end of the season if he accepts a secondary role, after which the club and player can revisit his future.

However, his high salary and long contract running until 2028 make any move difficult.

Offloading him would be complicated, and potential loan options are limited due to financial constraints.

The club and player must weigh multiple factors, from playing time to squad needs, before deciding on the best path forward.

World Cup ambitions add extra pressure

Ter Stegen’s ambitions with the German national team complicate matters further. The next World Cup may be his last chance to play as a starter in a major tournament.

To stay in contention, he needs regular game time, making his current role at Barcelona even more crucial.

Once medically cleared, Ter Stegen and Barcelona will need to sit down and decide his future.

Whether he remains at the club, explores a loan, or considers offers elsewhere, his recovery and readiness will dictate the next chapter.
