Portsmouth defender Regan Poole feels the Blues "are not too far away" from the quality of the top sides in the Championship this season.
After nine games they are 14th in the table on 12 points - but just three points off the league's top six.
John Mousinho's side have won three, drawn three and lost three games so far in the league.
And centre-back Poole is confident they will be able to take an extra step forward this campaign.
"I don't think we're far away at all (from being able to compete for the play-offs)," Poole told BBC Radio Solent.
"The next block of games before the next international break is massive, the Christmas period is just huge too.
"I think we're looking up rather than down which is massive. We're looking at how we can go up the table and if we can attack these upcoming games we can really kick on.
"It's belief now and we need to believe in ourselves a bit more, we're in a really good place right now but we do need to start winning games that we should be winning."
Poole joined Portsmouth back in 2023 from Lincoln City and has since made 53 appearances, scoring four goals.
He featured for the Blues in their League One title-winning season but picked up an injury towards the end of the campaign.
This season he has played in all nine of Pompey's Championship matches.
"When I signed, I wanted to be a part of getting the club back to where it should be," he added.
"That was a big factor behind me signing, I wanted to get to the Championship one way or another and it felt like it was right for me.
"I believe we're doing well at the moment but I believe we can go further and have a real good season."
