Lane Kiffin is never one to miss an opportunity even when the stakes are high. Ahead of Ole Miss’ Week 8 showdown against Georgia, Kiffin got in a jab at Kirby Smart.
During his Monday press conference, Kiffin was asked which coach burns more calories during games. The Ole Miss coach didn’t skip a beat with his response.
“I don’t know,” Kiffin said. “That’s a good question. I walked by the TV and saw his press conference today. Doesn’t look like he’s burned too many calories. But he does have a lot of energy games and he coaches really passionately.”
It's all in good fun. The two coaches have history having served as coordinators under Nick Saban at Alabama. They’ve kept their friendship intact even as they’ve risen to lead powerhouse SEC programs. Smart has lead Georgia to two national championships in the past five years. While Kiffin has revamped Ole Miss with three double-digit win seasons and a perfect 6-0 start to 2025.

Kiffin was quick to show respect as well. “(Kirby) finds a way to win a lot of games, a lot of different styles,” Kiffin told the Clarion Ledger. “He’s overcome a lot of adversity in games to keep his team together. That’s why he’s the best coach in college football now.”
The Rebels head to Athens after a 24-21 win over Washington State, while Georgia rallied past Auburn 20-10. With the series tied 1-1 between Kiffin and Smart, Saturday’s matchup will be a litmus test for both teams (3:30 p.m. ET, ABC).
